Pacific Storm: Allies
When Pacific Storm released in 2006 it offered an ambitious blend of action, real-time strategy, and epic strategy. It basically tried to be the ultimate World War II game, offering almost something for everybody. Action fans could jump into the cockpit of a carrier plane and dogfight, or perhaps man the anti-aircraft guns on a ship. Real-time strategy fans could command flotillas and squadrons in large naval and aerial battles. Or armchair admirals and generals could play the strategic-level campaign, managing weapon and technology research, building navies, and establishing and taking bases across the Pacific. While each leg of the game more-or-less worked, it did have quite a few problems, from dated graphics, bugs and crashes, and a complex interface. Unfortunately, many of these same issues...
Insecticide Episode 1
Adventure gaming is dead. It’s been said to death. Developer Crackpot Entertainment is attempting to take a crack at “reviving” the genre by adding a little more action to the mix with Insecticide Episode 1. How does the first episode in the two-parter do? It’s like eating chocolate-covered ants. The chocolate’s good, but the addition of the ants is an awkward choice. Insecticide takes gamers to a gritty film noir world filled with crime, murder, and mystery. It’s all pretty standard classic Hollywood storytelling, except that in Insecticide, you’re a six legged bug. As a matter of fact, there aren’t any “normal” humans in Insecticide which definitely lends itself to a sci-fi experience. Consider the game part “bee-movie,”...
Black & White
I’m going crazy. No really, I’m completely insane now. I’ve just spent the past five days chained to my computer, only taking breaks to scrounge whatever leftover pizza I can find in my room, a little bit of sleep, and of course to catch the latest episode of the Alf of my generation: Happily Ever After. I’m extremely tired, a bit delirious, and mildly dehydrated. Undulating red rings are burned into my eyesight from casting thousands of miracles, playing havoc with my peripheral vision and leaving trails whenever I scan my eyes over a light surface. I’m suffering from the peculiar feeling that I’m looking down on everything from high above at a 60-degree angle, and it’s making me slightly nauseous. All of this may sound pretty ghastly, but it’s...
BioShock
BioShock is Irrational’s finest offering to date, as well as the swan song for the Irrational brand in a way, since they recently relinquished their longstanding and well-established studio name for the more corporate, faceless tag of 2K Boston and 2K Australia. BioShock is a first-person shooter set in the fantastically unsettling city of Rapture, a metropolis built under the sea by the megalomaniacal Andrew Ryan. Throughout your lengthy stay, you’ll find options for combat as intricate and enjoyable as the story and characters are to interpretation, something that only a handful of games can ever claim to offer. But to call this game simply a first-person shooter, a game that successfully fuses gameplay and narrative, is really doing it a disservice. This game is a beacon. It’s...
